St. Vincent Wants To Make a “Heavy Record” in the Vein of Tool

Celebrity metalhead St. Vincent (born Annie Clark) has declared her intention to make a “heavy record” in the vein of Tool. She’s previously released a pair of videos (1, 2) of her performing the band’s “46 & 2.”

Speaking to Radio.com, the guitarist/singer/songwriter revealed that she had, in fact, originally intended for her forthcoming album, Daddy’s Home, to be considerably more Toolish. That changed when she “kept finding I didn’t have anything to say there”:

“The crazy thing about music is, you can plan and plan and think you’re gonna go one way, and then you start writing and the music just takes you wherever the music takes you. That was certainly the experience with this. I was dead set in my mind that after Masseducation, I was just gonna make this like, heavy record. Like just heavy the whole time — like, ‘Hey kids, you like Tool? Well, you’ll love the St. Vincent record,’ you know?”

But then:

“I got sort of down the road with that, but I kept finding I didn’t have anything to say there. It didn’t feel like anything to go more angular and harder after Masseducation. But where it did feel free and fun and fresh and a lot of other ‘f’ words was just to be like, ‘Let me go back to the music I’ve listened to more than anything else: stuff made in New York in the ’70s from ’71-76.’ Post-flower child, pre-disco, pre-punk, and just sit in that space for a little bit.”

St. Vincent concluded by reassuring fans (like me!) who would love to hear her try her hand at making a metal album that she still plans to do so someday:

“For fans who may be selfishly hoping to hear something like that Tool record… we’ll get there, don’t worry.”

So we’ll see if this ever actually happens, I guess, but she seems pretty confident that it will. Personally, I’m pulling for it. Honestly, just the fact that she keeps mentioning Tool and Pantera in interviews makes me happy; if she converts even one new fan, it’s worth it, right?

You can listen to the entire interview below. Daddy’s Home comes out May 14. The most recent single from the record, “Pay Your Way in Pain,” is also below.
