The Offspring Take a Shot at the Alt-Right with New Single, “Let the Bad Times Roll”
If you came of age in the ’90s, there’s a better chance than not The Offspring played a role in your musical development. Smash (1994) was a huuuuge album for me, and although I’d already gotten big into Ozzy, Metallica and Guns N’ Roses by then, I didn’t really differentiate; if it had distorted guitars, I was in. The band’s singles were ubiquitous for the rest of the decade and on into the beginning of the next, and while I lost track of them after that there can be no denying that Dexter Holland and co. know their way around a hook, even now.
And so: the band’s new entry, “Let the Bad Times Roll,” takes a shot at politicians who seem happy to cater to the darkness within a certain segment of the population, and no surprise, it’s got an infectious chorus. Dexter explains, “I feel like we’re in a unique period in history where instead of our world leaders saying, ‘We’re doing our best,’ it’s more like they’re saying, ‘Fuck it,’ and it’s really scary.”
Let the Bad Times Roll, also the name of the band’s new album — their first since 2012 — comes out on April 16 via Concord Records. Watch the video for the title track below.
