Watch: King Crimson’s Robert Fripp and His Wife Cover Metallica’s “Enter the Sandman” (Not a Typo)
I wouldn’t peg King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp as a Metallica fan, but I also wouldn’t think a 74-year-old would host a weekly performance series. My parents are about the same age; yesterday my mom asked me how to film a video on her phone (despite owning an iPhone for, I dunno, the last 10 years?) and just this morning my dad sent me a link to the *breaking news* that Iced Earth’s Jon Schaffer is a federal fugitive (“heavy metal guitarist” was in the headline; he does not know who Iced Earth are).
What I’m saying is, Fripp and his wife, Toyah Willcox, deserve serious kudos for their weekly Sunday Lockdown Lunch cover series, the latest episode of which sees the pair cover Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” hilariously referred to in the video title as “Enter the Sandman.”
But it’s the delivery that’s the best part: Fripp, wearing a suit vest and tie, plays the song on a gorgeous-looking gold top Les Paul while Willcox, riding an exercise bike, delivers an extremely dramatic rendition of the vocals, operatic effect, hand gestures and all.
A+++++ WDBWA! Watch below.
