Did You Notice the Brittney Spears Reference in the New Fleshgod Apocalypse Song?
Full disclosure: I did not listen to Fleshgod Apocalypse’s new song, “No,” until this morning. I like Fleshgod Apocalypse but I’m a busy guy and shit happens.
Had I listened to the song when it was first released last week, though, I might have noticed that around the 3:23 mark, operatic vocalist Veronica Bordacchini sings this:
Your laziness is killing me
I must confess I still believe
‘Cause what you do makes me lose my mind
Give me a sign.
Which anyone who was in high school circa 1998 (as at least three of Fleshgod Apocalypse’s members would have been) will surely recognize as being just a few words off from the chorus to Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”:
My loneliness is killing me
I must confess I still believe
When I’m not with you I lose my mind
Give me a sign,
Hit me baby one more time
Lest there be any doubt that the similarities are wholly deliberate, the melodies of the two songs are pretty much a match, too.
What is the meaning of this somewhat bizarre mid-song tribute to a decidedly not-metal pop singer? I have less than no idea. I do know that if Fleshgod Apocalypse wanted to do an EP of ’90s pop covers, I would wholeheartedly back that decision.
You can listen to the section in question below, and the original Brit-Brit chorus below that, although you probably already know what it sounds like.
