Tribulation Unveil New Single, “Leviathans”
Tribulation’s 2015 album, Children of the Night, was one of my absolute most favoritest records of that year, the perfect combination of black metal, rock n’ roll, sleaze and pure sex. I couldn’t get enough of it! Spun it over and over, went to see the band live whenever I could (they toured the U.S. a lot during that period). Its 2018 follow-up, Down Below, didn’t quite do it for me in tat same way, even upon multiple listens; it was fine, just didn’t get me THERE, ya know? A number of my friends and favorite metal writers dug the crap out of it, though, so maybe I was just in the wrong mood that year or something.
The band will return in January with Where the Gloom Becomes Sound, their fifth album, and today they’ve unveiled “Leviathans,” its first single. It’s got some hooky guitar lines — a trademark of this band — and a slogging, mid-paced groove, and it’s haunting and gothy and all the things a new Tribulation song is supposed to be. I’m not sure how I feel about it on the whole yet in comparison to how much I loved everything on Children of the Night, so lemme listen to this one a few more times and let it sink in, then we’ll come back right here and discuss whenever the band releases their next single or video — sound alright?
Listen to “Leviathans” below. Where the Gloom Becomes Sound comes out on January 29 via Metal Blade in the U.S. (pre-order) and Century Media in the rest of the world (pre-order).
