Lars Ulrich Says This Is His Favorite Songwriter of All Time
Lars Ulrich has named his favorite songwriter of all time — and it’s not a metal musician! SCANDALOUS!!!
It’s true — while you might have expected the Metallica drummer to name Tony Iommi or Steve Harris as Songwriter Supreme, Lars tells Classic Rock his all-time favorite composer is, in fact, Noel Gallagher from Oasis:
“The hardest thing in the world – trust me, we know this first hand – is to write a simple song. And the shorter and simpler, the harder it is. Those great Oasis songs – ‘Wonderwall,’ ‘Live Forever,’ ‘Supersonic’ – if you hear Noel do them by himself, just guitar and voice, it’s pretty incredible what those songs break down to when you’re that naked and that vulnerable.”
The drummer has expressed a passion for Gallagher’s music before, telling The Guardian in 2014 that “Oasis have been the soundtrack to my life for the last 20 years.” Which helps explain the Load debacles.
It remains unclear whether or not Lars has ever heard The Beatles before, but I’m guessing that, somehow, he hasn’t. His mind is gonna be BLOWN some day.
Ulrich once said that Lulu “makes… And Justice for All sound like the first Ramones album,” so, y’know. The guy is entitled to his opinions, and let’s not lose our (Pus)heads over this, okay?
