Fit For an Autopsy Guitarist Goes Viral in Racial Feel-Good Moment
A young black woman was driving down the highway when her car ran out of gas, so she did the only thing one can do in that situation: pulled over to the side of the road and called for roadside assistance. The dispatcher told her she’d need to wait about 90 minutes for help to arrive, but she ended up only waiting a fraction of that time when a white man with a shaved head, covered in tattoos, pulled up behind her and offered to help. He sped off to the nearest exit, filled up a canister with gas, returned to the young woman and sent her on her merry way.
Before the pair split, the woman snapped a selfie with the man. Here it is:
Hey, wait a minute… we know that guy… it’s Fit For an Autopsy guitarist Patrick Sheridan! The tweet has since gone viral, collecting over 181,000 likes and 24,000 retweets as of the time we’re publishing this (it was at 168,000 likes when I started writing!).
The woman added, “The whole point of this tweet is that I don’t usually trust people who look like him so I didn’t except him to be so kind. It’s a lesson to me not to judge a book by its cover.”
Amen! I think it’s important to point out here that in no way should we equivocate stereotypes and stigmatization of metalheads (a matter of taste) and people with tattoos (a choice) to the struggles black people in America have endured for hundreds of years. That said, there’s no question those stereotypes are harmful and untrue, and I like the message of this story.
The woman’s full story follows:
“I got stuck on the highway(wasn’t paying attention and ran out of gas).. This white man..tattoos all over, pulled up behind me, asked what’s wrong, then came back 10 mins later with gas and said “I didn’t want the cops pulling up to ‘help u’ and fucking with you.
“I didn’t realize I had run out gas. I was on my way to get an oil change. Then the car just started pulling(my car is relatively new so I was shocked)..my insurance company said it would take 90 mins for roadside assistance to arrive. And I looked up and saw his BMW.
“I’m honestly so shook. I mean this man SPED down the highway to the exit to go get me some gas. Then asked me if I needed money for gas(I didn’t)…
“He saw how genuinely shocked I was at how willing he was to help me and said ‘it sucks that it shocks u that a guy who looks like me is willing to help you, but one step at a time, we will change the world’…I teared up a bit
“Moral of the story, don’t judge a book by its cover.
The woman later added, addressing some replies:
“The whole point of this tweet is that I don’t usually trust people who look like him so I didn’t except him to be so kind. It’s a lesson to me not to judge a book by its cover. What are some of@you not comprehending?”
“Yeaaa I’m def not responding to any more of fucking weirdos who are somehow upset at this post. Mad because I’m surprised and touched somebody who looks like him helped someone who looks like me. Lmfao y’all are strange as hell.
“Here comes all the ‘woke’ MFs with their nonsense. Y’all bitter bitches can get the fuck out my mentions. Go rant somewhere else.”
And the other moral of the story is that Pat Sheridan drives a BMW. Beers are on you next time, dude!
