Mastodon’s Brent Hinds and High on Fire’s Matt Pike ARE Working on Music Together After All!
Mastodon’s Brent Hinds and High on Fire / Sleep’s Matt Pike have pulled off the sickest double sike. After giving the appearance the two legendary axemen were working on new music together with a vague social media post in February, the duo unveiled a collaborative guitar pedal last week, leading most of us to conclude that was what they’d been teasing.
But it turns out they’re working on new music after all! On a recent episode of the Hot-Blooded podcast (hosted by former MetalSucks contributor Cat Jones), which focuses on metal musicians’ love lives, Matt Pike appeared with his wife, Alyssa Maucere-Pike, who plays in Lord Dying and is also involved with the new project, and offered an update on that collaboration:
“Well, it was supposed to ramp up here and it’s going a little slow now [due to] quarantine. ‘Cause I planned on going back there [to Brent‘s] after this next Sleep tour or something and hanging out and sitting down.
‘Cause we got some stuff done, but it wasn’t a major lot. But there’s definitely all these… there’s like two hours worth of ideas, it’s just putting them all together, you know? And feeling each other out and having different… We kind of want to make it like so we can have different people, like different bass players, different drummers, different singers, different people playing tambourine, whatever [laughs]. Like some sax guys… ‘oh, what’s that dude doing over there, he’s choking a goose!’” [imitates sax] [laughs]
Needless to say we’re excited to hear what Pike, Hinds and Maucere-Pike come up with, whether it’s metal, country, bluegrass or a goose-choking orchestra. Sounds like it’ll be a while before any such music sees the light of day, but we’ll of course be on it.
