Take That, Puddle of Mudd: Members of Jinjer and Suicide Silence Slay Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings”
It’s likely that Jinjer frontwoman Tatiana Shmaylyuk, bassist Eugene Abdiukhanov and Suicide Silence drummer Alex Lopez (who also plays guitar here) were already working on this cover of Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings” before Puddle of Mudd’s cringey rendition of the track went viral last week. But it’s more fun to imagine a world in which they saw that cover and said, “You wanna see a Nirvana cover? WE’LL show you how to do a Nirvana cover!” and then hammered out this recording and video. And who knows, maybe it even happened that way.
Either way, it’s quite a rousing rendition, with Shmaylyuk opting for screamed vocals for the vast majority of the song (not for inability — she showcases her cleans plenty with Jinjer and they’r great), lending it striking immediacy. I never realized how simple — or short — this track is, but it sure packs a helluva punch in spite of both, and the crew here does it justice. Have a listen below.
