Devin Townsend: “I Do Strangely Self-Absorbed Heavy Metal”
Devin Townsend’s self-deprecating humor has always been one of the many things we love about him. The insecurities and neuroses he expresses out loud make him uber-relatable; we all have them, but we’re often too loathe or shy to discuss. It’s as if he’s saying, “Hey, there’s some crazy shit inside my brain, but you, too, can harness that energy for your creative passion!” He makes it feel OK to be the way we are, basically.
So: in a one-minute teaser video to promote this Saturday’s livestream charity concert — the second of three — Devin, introducing himself to anyone who might not be familiar, says, “If you don’t know me, I do strangely self-absorbed heavy metal.” And I literally laughed out loud. Devin, we love you! All music is self-absorbed to some degree, but there’s a whole lot in it for us fans, too!
“And I’ve been doing it for my whole life,” he continues while chuckling, “but that’s what I bring to the table, so in times like this I think you just offer what you can.”
He then expresses gratitude for his fans in the U.K., whose National Health Service (NHS) will be the beneficiary of this Saturday’s concert, before another typically Devinian sign-off: “Even if you don’t like what I do, spend twenty bucks, put it in mute, so at least it goes straight to the NHS.” Touché.
The concert will take place this Saturday, April 25 at 8pm GMT / 3pm EDT / 12pm PDT, and you can watch it at Stage It for just 20 bucks, as the man said. Check out last week’s performance below.
