Tool Concert Attendee Has the Coronavirus
The coronavirus continues to make its impact felt on the metal world, with Slipknot, Trivium and Lacuna Coil having all canceled their upcoming Asian tours within the past week. Now, according to a report from The New Zealand Herald, the virus has affected the metal community on a much more granular level: an attendee of a Tool show in Auckland, New Zealand on Friday, February 28 has since been confirmed to be infected.
Before we go any further, public health officials the world over have been preaching that casual interactions are unlikely to spread the virus. Close contact, exchange of bodily fluids (sneezing or coughing in close proximity), or prolonged time spent together (i.e. at home or in an office) are the most likely ways the virus can spread.
That said, New Zealand’s Director-General of Health, Ashley Bloomfield, has indicated that the man was in the front-left corner of the GA section at the show, and has advised that anyone who was in that section who feels they may be experiencing symptoms should get tested. “We encourage all people in the area of the concert to be aware of the symptoms and contact the Healthline if concerned,” he said. “The advice is that the risk is very low for all others who attended this concert.”
Casual contact could be in the hundreds, but Bloomfield stresses that health officials have taken appropriate measures since learning of the man’s diagnosis. “There was no way of tracking the people who were in that area of the concert, they are classed as causal contacts and the advise to them is to call Healthline if they have any symptoms. The people we are focused on tracking down the close contacts and health officials have been in touch with all those people,” he said.
The man has reportedly been in self-isolation since Wednesday, March 4.
The number of global coronavirus cases has passed 100,000, with 3,200 deaths confirmed, according to The New York Times.
