There’s a Ronnie James Dio Documentary on the Way
I have never heard a bad word uttered about Ronnie James Dio. He was one of those guys that everyone absolutely adored, and it’s not the rose-colored glasses of hindsight since his death speaking: it was that way when he was alive, too.
Which makes me especially curious about the recently-announced documentary on his life, bestowed with “official” status by the Dio estate itself. We all know Dio, the man with the heart of gold… but what if he had a dark side? Everyone does.
Press copy for the film doesn’t hint at that, instead offering generalities about the film, which is still very much a work in progress. But the preview sure does sound interesting:
“Currently in production, the as-yet-untitled film will be the definitive Ronnie James Dio documentary, incorporating never-before-seen archival footage and photos from his personal archives. The film will offer intimate scenes with his closest peers, friends and family as they bring us inside the life of one of rock and roll’s true heroes.
“Ronnie James Dio’s story transcends the standard rock documentary. Set against the backdrop of Dio’s unfinished autobiography — half-finished by Ronnie before his untimely death from stomach cancer in 2010 — the film will chronicle the inspiring journey of his life, love, and storied career. Whether playing sold-out stadiums or battling illness, his powerful voice and gentle heart have had a profound influence on his family, friends, and fans around the world.”
Wendy Dio, Ronnie’s widow, added that the film will include interviews with people from throughout his career, including members of Black Sabbath, Elf and Rainbow.
Count me hyped for this one. No word on when it’s coming, but it seems as if it won’t be until 2021 at the earliest.
