Listen: Conjurer Cover Mastodon and Slipknot, Palm Reader Cover Rage Against the Machine and Thrice
Here’s a little something to get you into the Christmas spirit in this final work week of 2019: covers of tunes by Mastodon and Slipknot from the budding stars in Conjurer, and of tunes by Rage Against the Machine and Thrice from the lads in Palm Reader!
Each band has chosen to play one of their covers straight while taking some artistic liberties with the other. Conjurer pay homage to their heroes on the ferocious “Blood and Thunder” with a few stylistic flourishes but otherwise staying true to the original, and the same is true of Palm Reader’s rendition of Thrice’s haunting track “Circles.” Conjurer’s cover of Slipknot’s “Vermillion,” though, is so doomed out, so distinctly Conjurer, that when it started I had to reference the Slipknot original to make sure I had the right song in mind! It’s fuckin heeeeeeavvvvvyyyy, bro. The same is true of Palm Reader’s take on RATM’s “Tire Me;” this is what I expect from Palm Reader, a somehow even more intense and charged version of Rage’s classic track.
