Mayhem Fest Will Return in 2020
The official Mayhem Fest Instagram account has posted a still from the original Rocky along with the caption “don’t call it a comeback. #mayhem2020.” So either Mayhem Fest is coming back in 2020, or whomever is running this account has a cruel sense of humor.
The fest previously appeared to bite the dust after a whole lotta drama during the 2015 edition. Its co-founder, John Reese, teased a potential comeback earlier this year.
The question, of course, is what form the fest’s return will take. Back in the day, it was a full summer tour; Vince points out that these days it’s trendier to do a one-off, or a series of not-quite-one-off performance(s). That’s how Warped Tour came back, and, oh hey wouldn’t ya know it, that tour, like Mayhem, is produced by Kevin Lyman.
Rumor has it that Sumerian Records founder Ash Avildsen now owns the Mayhem Fest name, having bailed out co-founders John Reese and Kevin Lyman of their debts. That would also add extra meaning to the Rocky reference: Ash’s father, John, directed the first and fifth Rocky films. MetalSucks has not been able to confirm this rumor but has reached out to Ash for comment.
You’ll know more when we do.
