Listen to Year of the Cobra’s Enticingly Sludgy New Album, Ash and Dust
Year of the Cobra are a doomy twosome hailing from Seattle whose debut full-length album just dropped, and it’s a riot of bass and distortion. Sometimes a two-piece band can feel lacking, but that is not the case here: Ash and Dust is chunky, full and grimy.
Amy Barrysmith’s enchanting vocals ripple through the deep bass tones creating an ethereal feeling throughout the album. She exhibits a beautiful range that evolves as the sound progresses effortlessly between deeply calming grooves and statically energetic climaxes. Amy’s soothing voice entices you in and then the music hits you by surprise, engulfing you in deep sludge, militant drumming, and soul-quenching bass notes. It’s almost reminiscent of a much doomier Alice in Chains; it has that kind of sonorous grunge feel, just with a lot more bass.
