Shit That Comes Out Today: November 8, 2019
It’s Friday, which means it’s new metal day! I’m honored to have been asked to take over this column. Look forward to my usual idiosyncratic recommendations as well as things people actually want to hear about. Also, it appears the release date I had for the Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra record was wrong, so just reread my write-up from last week.
Agnostic Front
Get Loud! (Nuclear Blast)
FFO: Agnostic Front
Agnostic Front hit 40 next year, and one can’t exactly accuse them of aging gracefully. NYHC for life, bro. Get Loud! offers a twelfth half-hour of New York hardcore from one of the pioneers of the sound. It’s not my thing, and frankly, you’ll already know if you’ll like it without hearing a single breakdown.
Quayde LaHüe
Love Out of Darkness (Adult Fantasy)
FFO: Warlock, Christian Mistress
If you missed Washington-based trad metallers Christian Mistress during their hiatus, then get pumped: Quayde Lahüe features that band’s guitarist, bassist, and drummer. With Mortiferum’s Max Bowman rounding out the dual guitar harmonies and newcomer Jenna Fitton taking over on vocals, they lean more towards the NWOBHM side of the spectrum than CM and kick ass doing it. No finer music for skewering the stars.
Schammash
Hearts of No Light (Prosthetic)
FFO: Batushka, Rotting Christ
It’s easy enough to throw genre labels at Schammasch — blackened, doom, psychedelic, epic, evil. Good luck finding ones that stick convincingly. Sure, their sound incorporates all those things (and more), but over the course of these 70 minutes, they explore all different realms of extremity. This release feels a little more accessible than the three-disc Triangle — if only because it’s shorter than a movie. It’ll still take you on a cinematic journey.
Wolfbrigade
The Enemy: Reality (Southern Lord)
FFO: Discharge, Disfear
Good week for fans of classic hardcore bands! Swedish D-beat/crust act Wolfbrigade still have teeth 25 years in. Of course, they also have a well-worn formula to draw from, but this brand of Motör-punk always satisfies. While there’s nothing especially new here, it still feels vital. Reality bites; Wolfbrigade bite back.
