Mastodon Drummer on New Album: “Feeling the Doom”

Mastodon are “about to really dig in” on their next album, according to an Instagram post by Brann Dailor in which the golden-haired and golden-piped drummer says he was feeling inspired by a hike in the woods near Asheville, NC. He also dropped this interesting nugget: “Feeling the doom.”

If that little quip does indeed mean Mastodon’s new album is going in a doomier direction — maybe Brann was just saying the wooded landscape felt doomy? or that the world is doomed? (both true) — I’d very much welcome that change. The band’s last few albums have felt a bit stagnant to me and they need to shake it up. Getting heavier by getting slower is exactly the kind of Mastodon I’d love to hear right now.

Presumably we’ll be getting a new Mastodon album some time in 2020. Stay tuned for updates.
