Serj Tankian on New Music from System of a Down: “The Status Has Not Changed”
Billboard ran a lengthy feature yesterday on System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, who has been quite active in recent years with activism, documentary film-making, film scores and plenty of other creative endeavors. The piece focused mostly on those elements of Serj’s career.
But the metal masses only want to know one thing: when will System of a Down end their 14-year draught and release new music? The constant asking despite several members of the band essentially saying the same thing over and over again, that the four of them can’t agree on a creative direction forward with new music but they’re down to hang, be friends and play the occasional show anyway.
So, of course Billboard asked (I’d do the same). And Serj, the gentleman that he is, politely answered:
“The status has not changed. We tour. We do shows together. We haven’t been able to see eye to eye to continue as far as creating new music together. Maybe one day that will change, maybe that won’t, but we’re all close friends and we enjoy each other’s company and we’re like family at this point, after 25 years. We’ll be announcing some new shows soon.”
One of those shows is a festival appearance in Finland next June, with another at Germanys Rock am Ring announced this morning. More on the way soon. As for new System music, you’ll just have to keep on waiting.
