In person, Opeth mastermind Mikael Åkerfeldt is very much the person you’d expect based on the trademark dry humor for which he’s become known while on stage. Mikael was polite and reserved, and displayed an almost childlike awe at the decades-old repair shop in Matt Umanov Guitars, where we met him to film the latest video in our ongoing series featuring well-known metal musicians watching fan YouTube covers of their music. But as soon as the cameras were rolling, Mikael was every bit the fellow you see on stage: quick, witty, playful and absolutely hilarious, sharing his stream-of-consciousness thoughts on a handful of Opeth covers fans have put out into the world
