Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) Featured on New 5 Seconds of Summer Single, “Teeth”
Point your fingers and laugh: I used to work at Hot Topic. The band shirt wall is sorted by very broad categories, the most common ones being classic rock, heavy metal, deathcore, rap, and miscellaneous shit teen girls are going crazy over (K-POP, Melanie Martinez, 21 Pilots). 5 Seconds of Summer are in that last category while you can usually find Rage Against the Machine on the other side of the aisle.
So who would’ve thunk that only two years after my reign at HT, both would come together to collaborate on a new song, “Teeth,” which features Tom Morello delivering guitar leads?
The group spoke with Apple Music’s Beats host Zane Lowe about working with Tom Morello as well as the new song: “Tom, we’re grateful enough to have him on the track, and he plays the last outro. That’s a big feat for us as well. We were rehearsing; we missed the opportunity to be there, but we have recorded proof it was him.” Frontman Luke Hemmings went on to add, “‘Teeth’ captures the soul of 5 Seconds of Summer and I truly believe it is a unique song to us as a band and doesn’t sound like anything out at the moment.”
Welp, I’m not sure I’m a fan just yet, but if it’ll get kids to Google “Rage Against the Machine,” I’m all there for it. Fuck the police, fuck the man, and all those other anarchist sayings. Listen to the song and Morello’s trademark licks for yourself below.
