Shit That Comes Out Today: July 26th, 2019
Good god, the new WordPress editor is a hot pile of garbage. Please excuse any formatting hiccups until somebody explains this shit to me.
Hyalithe
As If Sunlight Could Warm The Deceased (N/A) (released 7/22)
FFO Eneferens, Sanguine Eagle
Full Album Stream
You may know fellow Bozemanite Jori Apedaile from his one-man project Eneferens, which picked up quite a lot of attention last year with the strikingly gorgeous The Bleakness Of Our Constant. But if you’re expecting the moody, atmospheric vibes of his previous work, you’ll be caught off guard by the sheer brutality of his new undertaking, Hyalithe. Created during “less than ideal times”, this ragged, raw black metal is all of the musical genius of Eneferens in a much more desolate package. It’s name your own price on Bandcamp, so get it in your library, pronto!
Thief
Map of Lost Keys (Prophecy)
FFO Ulver, JK Flesh
Listen “Frost Breath”
You’re probably already familiar with the brains behind this operation, too: Thief is the dark electronic alchemy concocted by Dylan Neal, founder and dulcimer-wielder of the “green metal” project Botanist. It’s not metal at all, but you’ll dig it if you’re into “night music for haunted ballrooms and electric churches.” I can’t come up with any incredibly similar artists for comparison, but it’s somewhat along the lines of Justin Broadrick’s solo work or Ulver’s sonic experimentation. Map of Lost Keys explores a myriad of electronic sounds, from 8-bit game sounds, to theremin, to the groove of drum ‘n bass, with lyrics inspired by traditional christian chant and hymns. Textured and whimsical, yet cloaked in spectral darkness.
Thy Art Is Murder
Human Target (Nuclear Blast)
Listen “Human Target”
From Phil Boozeman’s critique: “It feels like TAIM wrote 50% of an album and procrastinated until the night before the record was due, so they just filled the spaces with unimaginative breakdowns and time signature changes more out of place than ethics on Wall Street. Thy Art Is Murder could’ve turned this album into a political wrecking ball, but instead, they seem content for the third time in a row to copy their breakout record, only to fall flat on their faces and lie there in Hate’s shadow. I expected MUCH, much more from them, and the rest of their fans should expect more, too.”
Throes
In The Hands Of An Angry God (Holy Roar)
FFO Neurosis, Sumac, Cult Leader
Listen “They Never Spoke”
The debut full-length of these Boise, Idaho crushers (previously of Bone Dance) blends sludge, hardcore, and post metal in such a suffocating manner that it’s impossible to ignore — it’s so fucking nasty, you guys. A methodical trudge through a barren wasteland suddenly becomes a grinding, ultra-syncopated storm of chaos, digging into a modern sound that’s disgustingly heavy, yet intimate and emotive. Check it out if you’re in to Cult Leader, for sure.
Soundgarden
Live From The Artists Den (UMe)
Listen “Black Hole Sun”
“As one of the most lauded Soundgarden concerts of all time, our team envisioned recreating their Artists Den performance at The Wiltern six years ago in its entirety through an immersive, first-of-its kind experience to bring fans back to that night in a very special way,” comments Amber Mundinger on the February 17th, 2013 Los Angeles performance coming to Blu-Ray and DVD. The vivid, immersive concert experience (including a siqq light show and other fancy-shmancy high tech stuff) features 21 songs released on film for the first time, including both hits and deep cuts for die-hard fans. Chris Cornell’s widow, Vicky, says “This live show was really special, and I know how much fun Chris had that night. The idea of giving fans the opportunity to experience it in its entirety is something I’m proud to share with them.”
