Refused Announce New Album, Tease First Single

A coupla weeks ago, we got to hear a snippet of “Chippin’ In,” a new song from Refused… albeit Refused as ‘Samurai,’ the band they’re playing in the upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077. In a statement accompanying that snippet, the band teased that new Refused music — as in actual Refused music, not Refused-as-Samurai music — would be “coming sooner than you think.”

Well, I dunno when you thought new Refused music would be coming, but if you thought it was anytime after August, you will indeed hear new Refused sooner than you thought you would.

The band has announced that they’ll release their next studio album, War Music, on October 18 via Spinefarm Records and Search & Destroy. But the first single from that album, “Blood Red,” will drop on August 2, which is just a week from Friday. You can check out a promising-sounding-enough thirty second teaser below:

In a statement, the band explains how the song is “a straight forward declaration of the band’s unwavering political and musical philosophy”:

“In the present moment, we who believe in the equal distribution of wealth in an egalitarian, ecological direct democracy, we who use gender-neutral pronouns and words like solidarity, moral responsibility, intersectionality and class warfare, we who believe in the Marxist dictum, ‘from each according to ability, to each according to need’ are on our back foot, on our backs, backed up against the wall, surrounded by enemies, our movement curtailed, our rights violated. It’s been clear for some time: the sun is setting on our beliefs.

“But we still believe that capitalism is cancer
and we still believe it can be cured.
We still believe that the patriarchy is cancer
and we still believe it too can be cured.
We still believe in the power of art to transform and expand the mind.
And last but by no means least:
We still believe in the total violent obliteration of the one percent.
Blood red until we’re fucking dead.
Let’s go.”

So, regardless of the song’s quality, at least the message will be positive.

Make snap judgements about “Blood Red” based on the very little piece of it you’ve heard in the comments section. We’ll see you back here on August 2 to discuss the entire thing.
