Shit That Comes Out Today: May 31st, 2019
After spending the past month isolated from contemporary conveniences and entertainment in Yellowstone National Park, it’s fucking nice to be home. This job is definitely a little easier with a WiFi connection that lasts longer than 30 seconds. To celebrate my return to modern life, I’ll be trekking to Boise this weekend to catch the lineup of the century: Inter Arma, Thantifaxath, Wayfarer, and KEN Mode. W00t!
Pound
•• (Silent Pendulum)
FFO Meshuggah, Botch, Car Bomb, TDEP
Listen “x_–_+_–_x_–.+_–_x_–+_–”
Yeah, I don’t know. All of Pound’s song titles look like that. Though, after hearing the Seattle duo’s funky mathematical spaz grind, it does make a little more sense — it’s a Morse Code of sorts, or some kind of hella advanced algebra or something. Whatever. It’s bananas. Meshuggah-esque polyrhythmic djenting is the backbone of the album, often derailing into dizzying improv jamming like you might hear from Botch. Honestly, between the musical clusterfuckery, the raw, punching production, and the breakdowns for daayyzz, it’s a lot to digest on the first listen. But you’ll warm up to it, I promise.
Darkthrone
Old Star (Peaceville)
Listen “Duke of Gloat”
Fenriz says Darkthrone’s new record is their “most metal one to date”. Does Old Star hold up to these bold claims, or is the guy full of bologna? Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s any more metal than anything else in their catalogue, but it’s without a doubt the band’s most “’80s sounding” release. Throughout the record, you’ll hear equal parts Black Sabbath, NWOBHM, classic Darkthrone, and I’m even picking up hints of Death. Don’t expect the gnarliest, gnastiest trve kvlt black metal, but do expect a ton of evil-tinted fun.
Nechochwen / Bhleg
Sorlande Sky / Majestic Translucence (Nordvis)
FFO Panopticon, Saor
Full Album Stream
Are Bhleg aware that, at any given moment, they’re responsible for causing some hilarious metalhead to do a little pretend retch thing upon reading their name? Probably. It’s fucking dumb, and I’m gonna do it every single time. Those Swedish folk metallers have joined forces with the Native American enigma Nechochwen to bring us a sacred split, celebrating nature with traditional cultural instruments among transcendent metallic atmospheres. Though it only sits at 13 minutes long, Sorlande Sky / Majestic Translucence contains more meaningful music than many full-lengths could ever hope to accomplish, so go outside or something and give this amazing album some love.
Krypts
Cadaver Circulation (Dark Descent)
FFO Hooded Menace, Dead Congregation
Full Album Stream
First ov all, I really fucking love this album art. Second ov all, this shit rips (or is “slaps” still a thing?) The latest from Krypts boasts a distinct hybrid of death and doom that’s entirely their own. One second, we’re subject to a maelstrom of chaotic shreddage — the next, an apocalyptic tempo shift that could give funeral doom a run for it’s money. Sometimes these changes come completely out of left field, and other times you don’t even realize it’s gotten twenty times faster until you’re dragged back down to 30 BPM again. Occasionally, Cadaver Circulation falls into a crushing Tomb Mold-ian groove, which think are most satisfying parts of the entire album. It’s all drenched in reverb, so if you’re into the cavernous aesthetic, make sure to spin this one.
Gaahl’s WYRD
GastiR – Ghosts Invited (Season Of Mist)
FFO Enslaved, Tribulation, Wardruna
Full Album Stream
At long last: a solo album from black metal’s most endearing personality! This perfectly angsty endeavor is a culmination of everything Gaahl has achieved thus far, highlights his previous efforts with notable tribal influence from his work with Wardruna (especially in the vocals department). Basically, it’s awesome; it’s the musical embodiment of Gaahl himself. If you’re curious about his thoughts on the project and the state of the black metal scene, check out this recent interview with Metal Injection.
