Yesterday, I listened to 1914’s sophomore full-length, The Blind Leading the Blind, for the first time, and I’m here to tell you, you should be really excited about this album. The WWI-themed Ukrainian band classifies their own music as blackened death/doom, but there’s a healthy dose of melodeath in there, too; the record ends up feeling like Peter Tägtgren was hired to streamline Enslaved. It has both the appropriate IMAX-level scope and draconic savagery for the subject matter. It’s one of those albums that makes you wonder how music can be so furious and so fun at the same time.
Having already sold out its very small initial pressing in Europe, The Blind Leading the Blind will get a major release on May 31 via Napalm. They’ve released the first single, “Arrival. The Meuse-Argonne,” via the below lyric video; I highly recommend you check it out. Once you realize how fuckin’ good it is, you can pre-order the album here.
