Pissgrave
Posthumous Humiliation (Profound Lore)
FFO: Undergang, Of Feather And Bone, Necrot
Full Album Stream
I, for one, feel #blessed to live in an era when it’s perfectly acceptable to call a band Pissgrave. We’re living in a very special time that only comes along once or twice in the evolution of intelligent life forms. Embrace it!
If you’re not already a fan, you can probably figure out what a bad called Pissgrave might sound like: perverted, repulsive, intensely nauseating. The reception of their debut was absolutely outrageous, and the hype for the follow-up has been quite promising. If, for some reason, you need external validation before spinning Posthumous Validation, then just know it’s officially received The MetalSucks Guild’s Golden Seal of Approval™… take that for what it’s worth. The record’s got some super sick solos, too, but don’t take my word for it.
Queensrÿche
The Verdict (Century Media)
Listen “Bent”
Awe hell yeah. The Verdict is so god damn satisfying. I think it’s safe to say that Queensrÿche have recovered from their mid-life slump; several tracks on this record are infectiously catchy. Some neckbeard will surely come along in the comments to say it’s “uninspired” or “not their best work”, but I stand by my… ehm… verdict. It’s a fun listen, and while I’d agree that the filler could be trimmed down a bit, the bangers and the sweet synth-y goodness outweigh the less exciting songs.
Der Weg Einer Freiheit
Live In Berlin (Season Of Mist)
FFO: Wiegedood, Winterfylleth, Drudkh
Full Album Stream
The name “Der Weg Einer Freiheit” kept ringing a bell for me, but I couldn’t make the connection until this morning. During my somewhat stupid last-minute solo trip to Iceland last summer, I caught this band at a festival in Reykjavik. One Viking Classic, please!
This new live album is giving me flashbacks for daaayyyzzz — how is sound so good at that?! As for the music itself, it’s a wholesome blend of the ethereal side of post-black-gaze-whatever with the rawness of old-school European BM. They’re great players, the recording sounds fantastic, the vocalist has a sweet mic stand, what’s not to love?
In Flames
I, The Mask (Eleven Seven)
Listen (if you must) “Call My Name”
I don’t really like to write about things just to blatantly shit on them when time could be better spent talking about stuff that’s worth listening to, but this new In Flames record is just… not very good. Sorry, folks, I’m gonna waste a whole paragraph to tell you how much you shouldn’t listen to I, The Mask.
There are two kinds of people: those who think In Flames have some all right music in their discography, and those who don’t. I’m in the first camp, and while I won’t deny that they’ve made some decent stuff in the past, I, The Mask is just shit. 14-year-old scene-queen me wouldn’t even have liked it, and Black Veil Brides was her favorite band. Aaagghhhh, make it stop!!!
Fange
Punir (Throatruiner)
FFO: Neurosis, Lord Mantis, Fister
Full Album Stream
It feels like I’ve been waiting 600 years to write about this album. I don’t even know how I came across it, but I think divine intervention may have been at play. Punir could very well be my favorite release of the year so far, offering up an unparalleled fusion of sludge, hardcore, death, and black that’s devastatingly heavy (is “skullfucking” a cool word to use these days?), yet still boasts some of the tightest grooves on the planet. According to people who have been acquainted with Fange longer than I have, “they’ve never sounded this good.” 10 points to France for this one.
