Inter Arma Release Dynamic New Song “Stillness” for Adult Swim Singles Series
Last week Inter Arma released “Citadel,” the devastating and unrelentingly heavy first single from their forthcoming album Sulphur English.
The band’s newly released song “Stillness,” part of Adult Swim’s weekly Singles series, is the complete opposite of that, at least as far as Inter Arma go (it still sounds like Inter Arma — they haven’t gone all Poison or Warrant on us or anything). The nearly ten minute track slowly builds from soft to heavy over its running time, starting with an arpeggiated acoustic guitar and quietly sung clean vocal line. It’s not until well after the two-minute mark that we hear any drums, and those too begin in subdued fashion. The track continues to add one element at a time until it’s all out post-metal banger, abruptly down-shifting back to where it started for its conclusion. It’s a fun listening exercise in how shifting dynamic can play out gradually over time, and it’s also a damn good song. Check it out below.
Sulphur English comes out April 12th on Relapse — pre-order here — although “Stillness” won’t appear on it.
