Sunn O))) Announce First New Album in Four Years
Has it really been only four years since Sunn O))) released their last album, Kannon? Wow. Time slows when you’re having Sunn.
Still, I know there are people who will be excited to learn that Sunn O))) will release Life Metal, their first new studio album since 2015, in April via Southern Lord (which, you may know, is property of the band’s own Greg Anderson). “The album will be supported by their first U.S. tour since 2017 and the premier U.S. tour of their 2019-2020 season,” according to a press release.
Stereogum has debuted a preview of the album, which you can check out below. It’s nearly five minutes long, so, naturally, it contains two notes.
Kind of hilariously, the press release also promises “a second more meditative LP titled Pyroclast… which will be revealed in the autumn 2019.” More meditative? Jesus fucking wept! I’ve spent ten days in a Buddhist temple that required all visitors to take a vow of silence for the duration of their visit, and it was faster paced and more exciting than this. I don’t know how it can get MORE meditative, short of coming with a prescription for Xanax.
Also kinda funny: “life metal” is the term Euronymous uses to diss death metal in Lords of Chaos.
Obligatory reporting about Sunn O)))’s Life Metal will continue as more information is made available. In the meantime, here are all of the band’s upcoming tour dates:
