Birmingham to Honor Black Sabbath with a Heavy Metal… Bench
Black Sabbath’s hometown of Birmingham will honor the band next month with a tribute truly worthy of four septuagenarians: a bench!
That might sound lame, but fret not, fellow headbangers, for this isn’t just any bench… it’s a heavy metal bench! Local media outlet yourwestsidestory.com reports that “The uniquely designed steel bench – incorporating images of the band’s original four members – will eventually be placed on the renamed Black Sabbath Bridge across the canal on Birmingham’s Broad Street.”
Here’s the official mock-up of what the bench will look like, complete with douche-looking tourists sitting on it:
There are 350 free tickets to the bench’s “presentation ceremony” on February 9; interested parties can apply here. A representative for the bureaucrats in charge of this stuff says they “expect” Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward to attend the event. So Ozzy definitely won’t be there and 1-3 of the other dudes may not actually show up. But they might show up! Heck, I’d even say Bill Ward will likely show up! And how often does one really get to attend the unveiling of a bench? What a unique opportunity! A story to tell your grandchildren, surely.
In other news, Black Sabbath are apparently having a whole bridge named after them, which is pretty tight.
