Daron Malakian is Already Working on New Scars on Broadway Material
System of a Down are not releasing new music any time soon, folks. Get used to that idea! Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian can’t agree on a creative direction — which they were open about in the press last year — bassist Shavo Odadjian’s optimism and attempt to hire a band psychiatrist be damned. Doesn’t mean the band won’t play live — they’ve already got some dates for 2019, and they stand to make bank on those — just means no new music. Sorry!
That hasn’t stopped Malakian from pressing on with his own new material, though; he released an album under his Scars on Broadway moniker in 2018, and he’s already back at it with more after having waited a decade between releases last time.
Malakian posted a Facebook video yesterday featuring some footage of him laying down tunes in the studio along with the caption, “Dictator was only the beginning. More to come in 2019,” followed by a bunch of hashtags. If he’s already recording vocals — particularly vicious ones, if this video is any indication — then the prospects for a new Scars release in 2019 are certainly bright. Will that scratch your itch for new System? You’ll presumably find out soon enough.
Serj Tankian, meanwhile, is also moving forward with new rock songs he’d originally written for System. More on that as it comes.
