Rumor: New Guns N’ Roses Recording Coming in 2019
Take this with a grain of salt for the time being, but…
A rumor currently making its way around the interwebs says we may be getting a new Guns N’ Roses recording in 2019. Don’t get too excited, though — I said “recording” for a reason. The Twitter titter suggests the band isn’t releasing a new album or even a new single that they themselves wrote, but, rather, a cover of T. Rex’s “Children of the Revolution,” which would be part of a larger tribute album.

This according to Mitch Lafon, host of Westwood One’s Rock Talk:
“Unsubstantiated reports claim Guns N’ Roses have recorded a cover of T-Rex’s Children Of The Revolution for inclusion on a upcoming tribute album. Other artists on the album are said to include U2, Elton John, Foo Fighters and Joan Jett. Until released consider this to be rumor.”
For whatever it’s worth, Lafon is a reputable broadcaster, and his Twitter page includes a photo of himself with Slash. Of course, any of us can stand next to Slash and take a picture, I’m just saying, y’know, this isn’t like the time that your dentist’s sister’s boyfriend’s roommate told you Chinese Democracy was for sure coming out in 2004 and would be a triple album.
Also for whatever it’s worth, Variety confirms that is an all-star tribute to T. Rex being put together for next year, even if GN’R aren’t confirmed to be part of it:
“The legacy of Marc Bolan and T. Rex will be celebrated in extravagant fashion next year, when BMG will release a tribute album — for which U2, Foo Fighters, Elton John and others are recording tracks — and documentary honoring the singer… The project is a companion to a T. Rex documentary coming from the company’s film division… Other performers slated for the set include Joan Jett, Nick Cave, Perry Farrell, Soft Cell singer Marc Almond, Kesha and Borns. A source tells Variety that U2 have recorded T. Rex’s biggest hit, 1971’s ‘Bang a Gong (Get It On)’ for the set.”
ALSO also for whatever it’s worth, Guns N’ Roses have a previously-established connection to T. Rex (besides Slash cribbing Marc Bolan’s look, I mean): they recorded a version “Buick Mackane” (inexplicably re-christened “Buick Makane”) for their 1993 covers album, “The Spaghetti Incident?”.
Assuming this is true — which is a massive assumption — it would be a little weird for Slash and Duff McKagan’s big return to GN’R to arrive in the form of a cover for a movie soundtrack. Then again, their final recording before they left GN’R was a cover for a movie soundtrack, so at least there’s some nice symmetry there.
