Yo, Go Listen To Conjurer!!!

In 2018, why would a band pigeon-hole themselves into a genre when they can get critical acclaim for doing whatever the hell they want instead? Many metal fans are starved for something “new” that breaks down genre walls yet still slaps, and while there’s metric fuck-tons of innovative stuff being released right now, it’s often overshadowed by the big names who are already set in their sound.

The past couple years have ushered in a wave of young new bands that are blurring lines and setting the stage for a new wave of groundbreaking, multi-faceted metal. One of these pioneering groups is the mighty Conjurer, a UK quartet who’ve been bulldozing their way to the forefront of the scene with one of the most captivating records of the year, Mire.

As their name would imply, Conjurer are capable of some state-of-the-art wizardry. Mire covers the most pervasive sounds in modern metal (black, doom, post, sludge, etc.) and somehow weaves them all together into a single, cohesive unit. Yet amidst all of the genre-mashing craziness, the band still have a very distinct sound that screams “Hey, we’re Conjurer, and we’re here to melt your goddamn face.” They noted in an interview with Upset Magazine that “the breadth of influence that we take has always been far more than we can handle,” and elaborated further on their style with Astral Noize:

“I feel like with a lot of bands, there’s usually one or two primary influences that the band are either vocal about liking, or that you can tell from listening – that, or a band has grown up being close friends and all had a lot of the same musical experiences and journey. We haven’t had any of that – we’re four guys with totally different tastes and musical backgrounds that by rights shouldn’t have ended up in a band together, yet it works. So if I’m writing something thinking “this will be a really cool black metal bit”, Jan [Krause, drums] will come along and make it sound like Rolo Tomassi, or Dan will suggest some different chords to echo Torche etc. – we don’t let ourselves fall into clichés because we’re never on the same page from the start.”

Get these dudes on your radar if they’re not already. The full stream of Mire is available below, and you can order it here from Holy Roar.
