Randy Blythe’s Grammy Medallion Sold for $3,050 in Benefit Auction

0

Who needs health insurance when Randy Blythe’s Grammy medallion and certificate for Lamb of God’s 2006 single “Redneck” is here to save lives?

Several years ago Blythe auctioned off the piece of metal memorabilia and donated the proceeds to benefit research on Myontonic Muscular Dystrophy research, which his friend Todd’s two sons had been diagnosed with. A bidder swept in with double the current bid in the auction’s final seconds, paid for it, and then gave the plaque back to Todd’s kids to keep!

Now Randy’s friend Todd has paid forward that generosity. With Randy’s sister-in-law recently diagnosed with breast cancer, Todd put the medallion and certificate up for auction once more to help raise funds for her treatment. The eBay auction came to a close yesterday and netted a whopping $3,050. That’s a helluva donation! Dan Rubino of Goergia: we salute you for your big heart and extreme generosity.

What’s more, the story continues: after the auction ended, Dan called Todd and told him to keep the plaque, and to pay it forward again in the future! Randy and Todd are of course planning to do just that with another auction next year to benefit “some sort or a life-saving medical research foundation or something that will help others.” Incredible.

Here’s Randy explaining how this all came to pass in an Instagram post:

“Going once, going twice… SOLD!!!!! My Grammy nomination medallion & certificate for the song “Redneck” went for $3,050!!!!! Man, that was exciting! I even did an attempt at the live-auctioneering voice thing (you can watch it in my live stories.)

“Now, here’s the UNBELIEVABLY COOL part of this whole thing: the first time I auctioned off this medallion 11 years ago it was to benefit Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy research after my friend @toddbstone’s sons were diagnosed with the disease. The winner of the first auction, one Mister Dan Gerawan of the great state of California, gave the medallion to Todd’s kids & said “Keep it!” Years later, Todd heard about my sister-in-law Bianca’s GoFundMe for her breast cancer treatment, & decided to pay it foreword & re-auction the medallion to help with her medical bills.

“Today, one Mister Dan Rubino of the great state of Georgia won the second auction for the medallion. After the auction, Todd called him & Dan said “Don’t bother shipping it to me- y’all keep it & do what you want with it.” FREAKING AMAZING! So Todd & I talked & next year we will figure out a different good cause that we can auction this thing off for, a charity of some sort or a life-saving medical research foundation or something that will help others!

“Holy cow, this Grammy medallion is gathering up some good karma. So thank you to Todd & BOTH Dans for being downright AWESOME people. We’ve sold this thing TWICE already, & although both of the guys who bought it were big lamb of god fans, they didn’t keep it- they just wanted to help out someone else- there are still plenty of decent people out there that help renew my faith in human nature. I salute y’all!”

And here’s Todd explaining a bit of the backstory:

“Bid on this Lamb Of God memorabilia and do some good! This original GrammyNomination Medallion was the first awarded to Lamb Of God’s lead vocalist, Randy Blythe, for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2006 in the category of ‘Best Metal Performance.’ Crafted by Tiffany & Co., this beautiful bronze medallion has great karma.

“In 2007, Randy auctioned this Grammy medallion to raise money for Myotonic Dystrophy research, with which my children had recently been diagnosed. In the final seconds of the Ebay auction, “D. Gerawan; Fresno, California” swept in with double the prior bid to win the item. Despite being a Lamb of God fan, Mr. Gerawan gave the item back to my kids.

“I told Randy what Gerawan had done and he called Mr. Gerawan to express his gratitude. Months later when Lamb of God was on tour in California, Randy contacted Gerawan again and invited him to be his guest at their show and to meet the other band members on the tour bus. This original medallion has since been professionally framed & matted.

“Now I’m auctioning it to raise money for Randy’s “sister” (his brother’s wife) who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The proceeds will go to help Randy’s sister with the enormous medical expenses her family faces via her GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/bi-strong).”

A GoFundMe for Randy’s sister-in-law Bianca has been set up as well; you can donate to that right here.
