Shit That Comes Out Today: October 12, 2018
I’ve come to the depressing realization that the sun might be setting on my moshing career. Even though I’m not that old, I keep on colossally fucking myself up to the point where it’s starting to require doctor’s appointments to fix all the shit I keep tearing. Maybe I should stretch first, maybe I should stop taking on the dudes who are 6’5″ and weigh 300+ pounds. I don’t know, I’m not a medical professional. But what I do know is that almost every local Kansas City show could be in trouble because it always ends up being me who has to start the pits. Some on is going to have to step up. I’m metaphorically pointing at the entire KC metal scene. Be the hero we need. Be the hero I fucking need.
Beyond Creation
Algorythm
On a playlist with Obscura, Rivers of Nihil and Cryptopsy
Listen: “Algorhythm”
Beyond Creation are fucking awesome and I was fortunate enough to see them lay waste to The Riot Room a few weeks ago on Obscura’s Diluvium Amerika tour. I’m not sure what else to say other than that if you have any respect for yourself, then you need to check these guys out. If you can imagine Obscura having a baby with Amon Amarth that somehow left out the viking stuff, then that would be pretty close to what we’re dealing with here. Also, the fretless bass in the title track arouses me. I have nothing else to say. Listen to this band or go away.
Iron Reagan
Dark Days Ahead EP (Pop Wig Records)
On a playlist with Municipal Waste, Power Trip and Brujeria
Listen: “Patronizer”
Iron Reagan are probably the most punk band that I’ll ever regularly listen to. I love all the aggression and anger of punk rock for the same reason I love all that shit in metal. Because of that, I’m not sure why punk and I never clicked, but I know that I like Iron Regan quite a bit and it’s probably because they blend metal into it. Anyway, if you’ve listened to Iron Reagan then you know what to excpect. If not, then read the first part of this paragraph. It’s aggressive, it’s mean, it will drink all your and it will piss on your couch. It’s Iron Reagan.
Polyphia
New Levels New Devils (Equal Vision)
On a playlist with Chon, Intervals and Sithu Aye
Listen: “G.O.A.T.”
Everyone, I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the esteemed MetalSucks family, Dick Gozinya. NLND isn’t another run at the djent style that Polyphia started out with. Rather, it continues the experiments of 2017’s The Most Hated that employs plenty of genre-bending twists and guest guitarists. If you were looking for a Renaissance sequel, then I hate to say it, but you’re out of luck. Polyphia have evolved whether you like it or not. You can read Dick’s full-length analysis here.
Chthonic
Battlefields Of Asura (Ciong Zo)
On a playlist with Graveworm, Stormlord and Keep of Kalessin
Listen: “A Crimson Sky’s Command”
When you say the words Taiwanese symphonic metal, Cthonic are probably the only band you’ll ever be referring to. Battlefields of Asura is Cthonic’s first full-length album in five years and with all the other shit that this band does, it’s a miracle they did it even that fast. Other than their music, I’d like to remind you all that vocalist Freddy Lim is an active legislator in the fifth district of Taipei. That’s something that not many bands can boast abou, unless you’re poor Fenriz who didn’t even want the job in the first place.
Atreyu
In Our Wake (Search & Destroy/Spinefarm)
On a playlist with punchable sad boiz, Converse with ‘rawr’ written on them and “Mom, I need more fucking lunch money”
Listen:“In Our Wake”
Atreyu are a stupid band. Their music is stupid, their fans are stupid and anyone who ever liked them at any point in their life is stupid too. Maybe it’s just my bias against remembering ever emo twat I went to high school and middle school with wearing these shirts, but even 13 years later, I see people wearing Atreyu shirts and I want to punch them in the face. Just to be fair, I tried to go into this with an open mind but it’s still just whiny pop punk emo bullshit that actually has the balls to rhyme ocean with emotion in the chorus like that’s something new and deep. Fuck this band and fuck everyone who likes them.
