System of a Down’s Serj Tankian is Working on “Rock Songs”

0

With new System of a Down music growing increasingly unlikely to ever see the light of day, the band’s members have been using other avenues to release songs they had written for the band. Earlier this year, guitarist Daron Malakian revealed that many of the songs on his most recent Scars on Broadway release were originally penned for System, and now the group’s singer, Serj Tankian, says he plans to do the same for his own solo release.

Tankian posted to Instagram over the weekend that he’s in the process of mixing “rock songs,” an innocent enough proclamation. But The PRP surmises that these are the same rock songs Serj alluded to back in June, saying at the time they were originally written for System but that he now planned to release them as part of a solo EP or as a soundtrack to his film.

One can only imagine what kind of magic would’ve resulted if Daron and Serj came together to workshop the songs they’d written on their own. That was always the magic of SoaD’s best material — the combination of both voices (figuratively and literally). While the most recent Scars on Broadway was good (definitely exceeded my expectations) and I’m sure whatever Serj is working on is decent, too… man, it’s just too bad they can’t see eye to eye creatively to recapture that special something that made SoaD so great.

Meanwhile, those looking to revel in a bit of nostalgia can catch System live this fall at the following dates:

10/06-07 Teotihuacan, MEX – Force Fest
10/13 San Bernardino, CA – Glen Helen Amphitheater (feat. Incubus, At The Drive In, Clutch, Pallbearer and Skeletonwitch)
10/14 Sacramento, CA – Aftershock Festival
10/16 Phoenix, AZ – Talking Stick Resort Arena (with At the Drive In and Skeletonwitch)
10/17 San Diego, CA – Valley View Casino Center (with At the Drive In and Skeletonwitch)
