Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Score “Dramatic Musical” from the Director of It Comes at Night
The Oscar winning duo of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have announced their next project: they’ll score Waves, a “dramatic musical”about “two young couples as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love” that “will be almost entirely synchronized to music, mixing some iconic contemporary songs alongside an original score by” the Nine Inch Nails team.
Waves will be the next film from writer/director Trey Edward Shults, the 2017 social horror film that got rave reviews from critics and baffled “Huh?”s from audiences. Clearly Reznor and Ross were among those of us who at least appreciated what the movie was trying to do (I really think its title, which makes it sound like a monster flick, hurt it with general audiences). Cast members announced thus far include Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, This is Us) and Lucas Hedges (who got an Oscar nomination for Manchester by the Sea), so clearly the mixed reaction to Night didn’t hurt Shults TOO bad.
Waves will begin filming in Florida next month, presumably for a 2019 release. Not everything Reznor and Ross score is a winner, but Waves should at least be thought-provoking. You’ll know more when we do.
