Abhorrence Drop First New Track Since 1990, “Anthem for the Anthropocene”

Though they haven’t released any new music in almost 30 years, Finland’s Abhorrent have been fairly active since their reunion in 2013. They’ve performed a handful of shows and released a live album in that time, and members have been keeping busy in other bands like Amorphis, Ajattara, Rytmihäiriö and Paradise Lost. Now, three decades after their formation, Abhorrent have announced a brand new album Megalohyrdothalassophobic, which goes to show that not only is the past is still alive but it’s possible to come up with an unclaimed album title if you’re simply willing to mash a bunch of words together. In fact, let’s break that title down: fear of big stuff in the water. A traditional, Lovecraftian approach to brutality.

Guitarist Tomi Koivusaari told Decibel about the band’s decision to release new music:

“Ever since we played those first reunion shows for the compilation album in 2013, it felt great to play together and we never really quit after that. When the live album finally came out and we decided to play a few gigs to support its release, it was kind of weird to play the same old tracks all over again. We had some song ideas waiting to be worked on, so it was basically just getting into gear and doing it. And if you are making new material, why not record it.”

The first single from the album, “Anthem from the Anthropocene,” is a modern take on Abhorrent’s former sound, with notable influence from Koivusaari’s work with Amorphis. The band commented “’Anthem for the Anthropocene’ is an anthem for a dying planet, for a species in mid-catastrophe. We think the stars are about right and want you to greet the arrival.”
