WSOU Picks of the Week: Acid Priest, Shvpes, Yob
Seton Hall University’s WSOU radio is the only all-metal, all-the-time station currently broadcasting in the US, and has been a force in metal for DECADES. It’s also streamable onlinefrom anywhere in the world! Each week, the staff of WSOU shares their picks for the heaviest of the heavy, as well as the station’s charts for that week, right here on MetalSucks. Enjoy:
Acid Priest – “The King Tide” (Nick P.)
If you can’t tell if it’s punk or prog, you’re probably listening to NJ natives Acid Priest. “The King Tide” kicks off with an extremely punk sound that makes you miss putting your hair in liberty spikes. Then, out of nowhere, the drums start doing something you would never hear from the Dead Kennedys: playing off beats, adding a unique sound to the already different one they started with. Punks that can play their instruments? Count me in.
Shvpes – “Undertones” (Danielle M.)
Have you ever been hurt so deeply that you try to claw your way back in to get revenge on another person? Shvpes have released the song for you. “Undertones,” if I had to describe it in a single word, is clean. With lyrics that will stick in your head and stay there, vocals that remind me of Bullet For My Valentine and a beat that will catch your attention, this isn’t a single you can sleep on. Tie it all together with a music video that appears like a crossover of Sin City and Tron, and Shvpes have my attention for their upcoming Mixtape 1, coming out on July 6th.
Yob – “Our Raw Heart” (Nick E.)
Ever sit down and say to yourself, “Wow, I could really use a fourteen minute track of amazing doom metal?” You obviously answered “yes” and you obviously have to check out Yob’s “Our Raw Heart.” Meticulous and gloomy throughout, this single off the new album of the same name is a perfect accompaniment to a fifteen minute break from your crazy day. Heavy but not erratic, “Our Raw Heart” will have you chilling out and nodding your head from start to finish.
