Nothing Go Full ’90s Grunge Retro on New Single “Zero Day”
Heavy grunge-revivalists Nothing are really leaning into the ’90s aesthetic this time around if their new song “Zero Day” — the first to be released from their forthcoming album Dance on the Blacktop — is any indication.
Let’s start with the production, so gloriously fuzzy and soft! Courtesy of producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Breeders, Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile), none of the sounds on “Zero Day” pop or cut, the guitars, vocals and drums blending into each other like whisked oil and vinegar, together but still separate. The guitars are jangly and uneven, the drums dry and thuddy, the vocals understated and far back in the mix. Lyrically, the track tackles the ultimate pointlessness of human existence, and the music video lays on the dark themes even thicker. The track is super catchy, too, with a classic, melancholic three-chord progression guiding the chorus. If it’s a certain kind of ’90s aesthetic Nothing are going for, they’ve nailed it!
