Killswitch Engage’s Jesse Leach Offers Vocal Surgery Update After Five Days of Complete Silence
After emergency surgery on his vocals cords that forced the cancelation of seven shows, Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach is on the mend. The singer posted a quick update last week immediately following the surgery to update his fans that the procedure was successful and he’s since been deep in recovery mode at his frequent retreat in New York’s Catskill Mountains.
Jesse shared an update on Instagram yesterday that doctors have finally cleared him to do some light vocal exercises after five days of complete silence. Leach shared a video of himself performing those exercises, which involve him quietly humming through a submerged straw for a few minutes every few hours. He explains:
“After 5 days of complete silence, it’s day one of voice rebuilding. Low ‘U’ sound into the straw submerged about 1/2 inch into the water. This along with gentle sliding scales for about 5 minutes every 4-5 hours. Today I’m only doing about 3 minutes. The force of the air should be Gentle yet not too gentile. This is great for anyone who deals with fatigue or sickness. This method acts like a massage for the voice! There are tutorials online search: Tube singing as well as Straw singing, (make sure to get non toxic straws) fascinating stuff!
“Thus begins my rebuild. I’ll post more as I begin to progress. Here we go friends… “
You can watch the video below. Meanwhile Jesse’s been making the most of his forced silence by biking, hiking and generally enjoying the nature and comforts that the Catskills offer; there are plenty of posts on his Instagram detailing those pursuits as well.
