Dolores O’Riordan Was Scheduled to Record Cover of “Zombie” with Bad Wolves on Day of Her Death
In the comments of yesterday’s post announcing the sudden death of Cranberries vocalist Dolores O’Riordan, MetalSucks reader Tim left the following:
“No they arent a metal band but Zombie was covered by many many metal and hard rock bands as well as softer rock and pop acts. One of the most influential rock songs of the 90’s. They had other good songs too of course.”
“Zombie” in particular was hugely influential, no doubt, and indeed YouTube is full to the brim with metal covers of the track.
Bad Wolves — the band featuring ex-God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle and ex-Divine Heresy (etc.) vocalist Tommy Vext — had planned on adding to that list, with a recording session scheduled for yesterday in London featuring O’Riordan herself (which explains her presence in a London hotel room). Vext released a statement via the band’s official Facebook page, commenting:
“We are shocked and saddened at the news of Dolores’s passing, mere hours before she was to record vocals on our upcoming version of Zombie. We have always had deep respect for her as an artist and a vocalist and she was never afraid to bare her soul in her music and lyrics. Zombie is an incredibly personal song and although we are a hard rock band, we always felt the rawness and honesty she projected on stage and in her recordings was something to which all bands should aspire to, regardless of genre. When we heard she liked our version and wanted to sing on it, it was the greatest compliment a new band, or any band for that matter, could have received. Our hearts are broken that we were not able to see this collaboration through and our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, loved ones and fans in Ireland and around the globe. We hope we can still make her proud by sharing our version of Zombie with the world.
It’s a shame this collaboration never came to fruition. O’Riordan had allegedly heard Bad Wolves’ instrumental recording of the track the night before her passing and expressed excitement about it according to Dan Waite, the Internal Managing Director of Eleven Seven Music (Bad Wolves’ record label) and a long-time friend of O’Riordan’s who coordinated the recording session.
PLEASE let it be the case that mental illness hasn’t inspired yet another suicide. Please. More on this story as we get it, of course.
