Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas to Release Live Album and Documentary; Watch a Preview Here
I’ve been fortunate enough to say a handful of truly mind-blowing metal shows this year, but the one at which I absolutely had the most fun was Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas performing Mariner, the best metal album of 2016, in its entirety. Obviously a lot of that had to do with the performers’ talent, but at least some of it was because I knew I was witnessing something really special, and probably for the only time in my life. This magical pairing was never supposed to do one tour together, let alone two (one in Europe, one in the U.S.), so the chances of them ever coming back around are fairly slim. Their upcoming performance at Roadburn 2018 could easily be their last.
Which is why I’m delighted to report that they’re now planning to release a Mariner live album and video, reportedly sometime around April of next year. In addition to a concert filmed/recorded in Belgium last fall, the release will include a feature-length documentary about the collaboration. In other words, we may never see Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas tour together again, but we will definitely have a high-quality documentation of their time together.
If you’re as excited as I am for this thing and April suddenly seems like it’s a billion years away, hopefully this sixteen-minute-long, abridged version of the documentary will tide you over. In fact, I’m gonna stop writing this now so I can watch it. Later.
