Slaves on Dope, DMC, and Chuck D.’s “Coming like a Rhino” Is the Nu-Metal Song You Always Knew You Never Wanted
D.M.C., of Run-D.M.C. fame (it would be pretty weird if his name was DMC and he wasn’t in Run-D.M.C.), actively recruited Slaves on Dope to appear on “Coming like a Rhino,” a song for his new EP, Back from the Dead, the Legend Lives. Slaves on Dope exist solely to make sure Dope aren’t the worst band of all time to have the word ‘dope’ in their name, so I don’t know why D.M.C. would do such a thing. Maybe he lost a bet. Maybe he owed someone a favor. Maybe D.M.C. is secretly deaf now. Or maybe he was just feeling cocky — after all, Chuck D., from Public Enemy and Prophets of Rage, also appears on the track. With a 2-1 ratio of coolness versus shittiness, he may have assumed that the odds of Chuck D. and himself elevating Slaves on Dope’s work were pretty decent.
Alas, the opposite is true. Slaves on Dope — referred to here as S.O.D., as if!!! — are weighted shackles around an albatross around the song’s neck. Forget making you long for glory days of Kid Rock and Metallica; this will make you long for a pain so sweet as Ja Rule and Metallica.
Check out the song below… if you dare!!! Back from the Dead, the Legend Lives comes out on Black Record Store Friday.
