GWAR Guitarist Mike “BälSäc the Jaws ‘o Death” Derks Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Help with Medical Expenses for Potentially Fatal Bone Marrow Disorder
Last week, we learned that GWAR guitarist Mike Derks — better known to fans as “BälSäc the Jaws ‘o Death” — has been diagnosed with myelofibrosis, an incredibly serious, potentially fatal bone marrow disease. At that time, we told you we’d let you know if Derks solicited financial assistance for his medical bills.
Well, Derks has now solicited financial assistance for his medical bills.
Derks’ medical expenses, you see, already total $80,000. Furthermore, once Derks has the bone marrow transplant necessary for him to survive, not only will those expenses increase, but he’ll be forced to take a sabbatical from touring for a year. As we’ve heard time and again, touring is the primary source of income for most metal bands… and GWAR’s legendary stage shows eat up a lot of the band’s profits. So it makes total sense that Derks would need some help now, and if you’ve ever enjoyed GWAR, it makes sense that you’d kick in for that help.
You can donate directly to Derks here. He has also launched a virtual blood donor drive for those willing to potentially be bone marrow donors. You can learn more about that here.
