Check Out China Girl, the New Band Featuring Members of Pig Destroyer and Cattle Decapitation
World, meet China Girl. Although their name and not-at-all-unreadable logo might lead you to believe they’re some kind of David Bowie cover band, they are, in fact, a new project from John Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Scour, etc.), Derek Engemann (Cattle Decapitation, Scour), and Dennis Sanders (Spirit in the Room, ex-Black Light Burns). Which is to say: they sound nothing like David Bowie.
So what do they sound like? Well, actually, their influences are all over the map, ranging from death metal to hardcore to doom to noise rock to black metal to grindcore to drone, and at different points, their just-released self-titled debut includes horns, a choir, and some other atypically metal instruments I’m not sure I can correctly identify. Their sound is seemingly dictated only by two rules: “Make it heavy” and “Make it dirty.” As a result, the album is a highly multifaceted experience that never outstays its welcome; there’s such a variety of genres that you consistently wanna hear what the band is gonna try next. They are the opposite of bands whose music allows the listener to more or less “get it” after just one or two songs, and there’s a lot of potential for new discoveries with repeat listens. I’ve only just begun to really dig into this record, and I’m already way into it.
You can, and should, get into China Girl below. Then go buy the album. Then go sacrifice a goat to the Dark Lord that we get some live dates soon. ‘Cause China Girl could really be something.
