Metallica Cover Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil,” Appear to be Having the Time of Their Lives
Let this stand as the antithesis of that horrible, horrible scene in Some Kind of Monster where poor millionaire rock star Lars Ulrich bitches about having to play drums for a living.
While performing at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California over the weekend, Metallica broke into an impromptu cover of Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil.” Aand while you can’t really see Lars’ face in the footage, James, Kirk, and Rob all appear to be having a ball. Their goofy grins remind you that they may have assistants who help them put their pants on, but they help them put their pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else. When this song was first released, Hetfield was fifteen, Hammett was sixteen, and Trujillo was fourteen; to now be performing it in front of a stadium full of people must be the biggest mind-fuck ever (in a good way).
