Megadeth are Heading Back into the Studio Later This Year

0

Dystopia came out in January of 2016, less than a year and a half ago, and I honestly can’t remember anything about the most recent Megadeth album other than the fact that it didn’t suck as bad as Super Collider. The latter album, combined with Dave Mustaine’s increasingly batshit right-wing politics, all but ended my interest in any new material from the band.

There is this, though: Megadeth’s next record will be the first to include drummer Dirk Verbeuren (ex-Soilwork), who joined the band a year ago. So at the very least that should be interesting!

In a recent interview with Oklahoma City radio station KATT 100.5 FM, Mustaine revealed that the band is eyeing November or December to get back into the studio to start writing for their next record:

“We plan on going back in the studio. We’re probably gonna go back in and start throwing some ideas around at the end of the year. We were thinking about November or December, and actually spoke about it last night.”

He also had some very kind things to say about Verbeuren (and his predecessor, Lamb of God’s Chris Adler, who played on Dystopia):

“As good as Adler was, Dirk’s feet are more advanced. And I didn’t think that was possible, because Chris is such a great drummer. But there’s a reason why Chris recommended Dirk, and I love him for that. I think that he’s a really solid friend for making that recommendation, ’cause a lot of guys wouldn’t do that, but he’s a true friend, and I was stoked having him in the studio.

“[Dirk] is one of the most pleasant, easy-to-get-along-with guys I’ve ever met in my life. I’ll walk up to him and he’ll smile and lean forward and pat me on the back. He goes [adopts thin accent], ‘How’s it going, buddy?’ I could say, ‘Oh, man…’… anything. ‘Oh, okay, buddy.’ [He] smiles and pats me, ’cause he’s just a happy guy. I’ve never, ever, ever seen him not smile.”

If the schedule sticks, presumably we’ll see a new Megadeth record in mid-2018… we’ll see. In the meantime you can catch Megadeth on tour right now with Meshuggah, TesseracT and Lillake and later this year with Scorpions.
