I’m not an Iced Earth fan, but I’ll say this for the band: you gotta appreciate their focus on history. If they’ve inspired a love of the subject in even just a handful of young metalheads, then they deserve a pat on the back.

Case in point: their new song, “Clear the Way (December 13th, 1862)” will very likely send a lot of kids straight to the Internet machine to look up the titular date; a portion of those kids will then do actual research into The Battle of Fredericksburg; and a portion of those kids may continue, without prompting from teachers, parents, or other authority figures, to study the Civil War, or maybe just American history in general, or maybe, Dio willing, world history. Maybe one of them will grow up to be a history teacher; maybe one of them will grow up to be the next David McCullough or Stephen Ambrose. Wouldn’t that be great?

Of course, some of them will also grow up to try and be the next Jon Schaffer. But that’s okay, too.

Check out “Clear the Way (December 13th, 1862).” The song will appear on Iced Earth’s new album, Incorruptible, which comes out this Friday, June 16.
