Fall Out Boy Pay Homage to Nikki Sixx’s Overdoses in New Song “Young and Menace”
It’s no secret that the dudes in Fall Out Boy are metal fans. Two of them play in The Damned Things with members of Anthrax and Every Time I Die, they’ve covered Pantera, and they’ve incorporated Slayer samples into their live show, and, oh yeah, duh, they sampled Mötley Crüe’s “Too Fast for Love” as part of their song “American Beauty/American Psycho.”
So the reason I was surprised to hear this reference to Nikki Sixx’s multiple overdoses in their new song, “Young and Menace,” wasn’t ’cause I assumed the members of Fall Out Boy don’t care about Nikki Sixx… it was because I would have bet that the allusion would fly over the heads of most Fall Out Boy fans, or really anyone who wasn’t knowledgable about Mötley Crüe. I guess I underestimate the popularity of the Crüe and their episode of Behind the Music. Nikki Sixx accidentally killing himself is now pop culture lore, right alongside Led Zeppelin’s mud shark and John Lennon’s assessment of Jesus Christ’s popularity when compared to that of The Beatles. Weird.
Sixx, of course, still has the honor of having written the best song about his OD:
Fall Out Boy’s new album, M A N I A, comes out September 15.
