Ex-Pantera Bassist Rex Brown Releases Solo Track “Crossing Lines”
If you enjoyed Kill Devil Hill — Rex Brown’s project with Vinny Appice — then you’re probably gonna dig Brown’s new solo track “Crossing Lines.”
If you came here expecting Pantera… sorry. You might like this better.
Not that Brown gives a shit whether you were hoping for something like Pantera anyway:
“We’re not going to necessarily cater to metal fans, but the guys who grew up with Pantera, a lot of them love all the same stuff that I grew up on, too. This is just something else I’m doing for fun, man. And musical Freedom. Fun has to come into it or I’m not going to do it. I’ve had a tremendous career and now I feel like I’m thirty years old again. This has given me that freedom I needed.”
As someone who liked Kill Devil Hill alright, I think the track is enjoyable enough. It’s got that same ’90s grunge vibe as the KDH stuff: a little Alice in Chains, a little Meat Puppets, and yeah, there’s also a dose of the Southern twang you’d expect from Brown present here, and a catchy hook, too. It’s not reinventing the wheel or anything, but you probably don’t expect that from Brown… nor did he intend to do it.
Smoke On This… comes out July 28th via eOne; pre-order here. Listen to “Crossing Lines” below.
