Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Says Judas Priest Aren’t Metal
Brent Hinds may have just outdone himself in the batshit crazy department. Which is really saying something, ’cause the dude has done a lot of batshit crazy stuff over the years.
In a new interview for The Jasta Show, host Jamey Jasta asksHinds about his infamous “I fucking hate heavy metal” quote from 2015. Although he’s tried to backtrack somewhat since giving the quote, he tells Jasta “I really don’t” like heavy metal before declaring his love for Judas Priest and delivering this aneurysm-inducing assertion:
“Judas Priest is not metal, people, it’s rock n’ motherfuckin’ roll! Who in their right mind that has a brain in their head thinks that Judas Priest sounds like a metal band?”
Um. Gee. I dunno. How about… EVERYONE?!?! Like, literally, everyone. I mean, they’re one of the most definitive heavy metal bands of all time. Saying they’re not metal is like saying A Tribe Called Quest isn’t hip-hop. Saying that no one who has a brain in their head thinks that Judas Priest sound like a metal band is like saying that most scientists don’t believe humans require oxygen to live. It’s a hundred-and-eighty degrees away from reality.
Even when Jasta brought up “Painkiller,” a song which is metal as fucking fuck, Hinds held fast:
“To me, that’s just hard rock ‘n’ roll. I’m not buying into that. I heard all Judas Priest songs, I went on tour with them, I know them all personally, they’re amazing people. They truly think they’re metal gods, like Rob Halford’s like, ‘I’m a metal god.’ That’s weird to say, but whatever. [Chuckles] Like, just don’t say it, it just makes you sound weird when you say it.”
Wait… I’ve never met Halford… does he literally walk up to people an introduce himself as a metal god? I admit, that would be weird… but it would not change the fact that Judas Priest are metal.
So yeah Hinds is off his goddamn rocker on this one. But we should all thank him for contributing a new heavy metal “alternative fact”!
